"real me"?? errr i don't think that's proper english. thanks for all that explaination about Freud although it has nothing to do with the question.

用True color来形容一个人的天性本色这种用法，不知道从何而起的，不过倒是有一首Cindy Lauper的歌，歌词把True Color用得之漂亮的：

I do not agree with what you have cited on my reply with the definition either real me or ego.
The wording itself implicated in this question was not clearly explained by original poster.
Do you have better or constructive suggestion to share with us instead of critic?

My real self? my authentic self?

I don't see anything wrong with "real me". It really depends on the situation.

eg:
A: You were really open tonight in the bar. It didn't look like you.
B: Well, I don't know. Maybe it was the real me.

The word "Ego" normally refers to the way one feels about himself. Like "He has an enormous ego."

Our eight star man put it there in his reply simply as a comparison or reference. Again, I don't see any reason for disagreement.

By the way, I am really happy that this forum is back in business after the re-organization. I was so shocked not to see it last night.

True color 的典故请看:

True color 的意思较接近 "坦白" 或 "显示真正的意图"
, 这也可以算是有 "真我" 的意思了.

但, 真要讲 "真我" 的意思时应是不会使用 my true color 的.
因为 "true color" 大都是在讲别人或叫别人的, 而不是用于自己.

It doesn't matter whether or not the original poster clearly defined the term or not, my point is that there is no such thing as the phrase "real me".  no where in any text book have I ever seen that real word.  and yes I took Psychology in school too.  Second of all, what is wrong with criticing here?  People are posting questions here and expect an answer, and therefore its the poster's duty to offer valid answers or suggestions.  My post was to question the validity of your response.  It's not the first time that I have seen people offer wrong suggestions on this forum.

Now, just incase I get "criticized" for not offering any constructive suggestions here. i'll give my two cents.

My true color are typically referring to a person's own personality, the true personality underneath the facade of social norms.  People usually use this phrase when they want to stress their own intergrity.

That is very interesting that you haven't heard of the phrase "real me", 'cause if you simply type "real me" and search it from the net, you can find tons of information about "real me".

It is in the tilte of songs.  The Real Me(1973), Can you see the real me.

It is the name of one of the the episodes of Sex and City.  : The real me (2001)

It is the title of a book talking about sex. "Finding the Real Me: True Tales of Sex and Gender Diversity"

In this article  http://www.odr.info/unforum2004/chester.htm the author used the term "real me" three times.

It is the name of a poem:

Well, I don't have to go further, but even if it doesn't sound right grammatically to someone, people are using it with a reason: It makes sense.

Well, my bad. I have never heard of "Real Me", because thats what the poster wrote in his reply. I have heard of "The Real Me". Notice the difference here? Every single example you have found is The Real Me. and not simply Real Me. that's a grammar issue here. You can argue all you want but there is no such thing as "real me", however, "the real me" is valid.

Errr. So that is what you've been concerned about- "the" definite article.  I see your point now.  We could have saved a lot of discussion, if you'd  pointed this out earlier.

However, do you agree, as a noun phrase, "real me" doesn't have to go with the "the"?

MY idea is: it is possible to use "real me" alone.  But in a sentence, nouns or noun phrases have to go with an  article, unless it is dropped out grammatically.

Any one who has a common sense of English WILL put an  article automactically before "real me", if it is used in a sentence.

And, see, I didn't put "the" in front of "real me", just now!!

give my two cents. 是有很多人如此说了.

但较多人说 : put my two cents.
且几乎应就是说: put my two cents in.

原应是 put my two cents in "说" 起来比较正确且 "有力",
但,可能大家想说得 "客气" 一点而改成了 give my two cents.

"give my two cents." 因大家都懂, 故就 "没错".

同理, real me 当然也没错啊.

First of all, to Cliemx, thank you giving me more points for my replies so far, I didn't reply them to get points but it still felt nice.
Now to both billhung and 吴华. Bill, I really don't see why you still need to argue with me on my responses, and the two example of song title weren't accurate in term of grammar anyways. One is a chinese song and the other is a japanese song. My whole point is that, if we want to help people here in this forum, we can't just teach them something that is correct or make sense if the reader is fluent in english. People post questions here BECAUSE they are not fluent in english. Being a foreigner, I am sure you all have noticed some difference in the way we speak or write english as compared to a native english speaker. We do that because we learned chinese first, and so many things such as "the" is simply forgotten when we speak. So I will still stand firm on my response that "real me" is not correct, instead "the real me" is correct. As to 吴华, you can find all the references you want to find some nicky picky thing (<--- here is another phrase you can pick on i am sure), but why don't we get back to the original question posted on this topic right?
No one can simply say "real me", it's simply not correct. Sure people understand what it means, that's because they heard of "the real me" before, but it doesn't mean that's what you should teach someone who is learning english.

1. I have NO question about your argument. However, if I may say, you are the one who started the whole thing by not giving your complete answer all at once.

errr.. so what is the proper English? You stopped there and the argument began.

Had you said something like:" In a sentence, it is  properer to say 'the real me'" in your frist response, I would just have zipped my mouth and said, " the man's got his point."  And yes, you've got your point.

My standpoint is:

The word "the" is definitely not part of the noun phrase.  And the Max was asking 真我 in English, so, "real me" is an "OK" answer.

It's like somebody asks what is 太阳  in English. Your will probably say "THE" sun i/o "sun".  And your are right in our solar system where it  is one and only.

But with someone who has split personality, he/she might have two or more me's. And they are all real me's.  Real me No1. might say," Hey you are a macho man, don't be a sissy."  Real me No.2 might say," That is not true. You like girlish things. You are not a man."

Should I put "the" in front of "Real me No.1 and No. 2?

  I guess you really want to continue this "discussion" we have here so here we go again.  I am not really sure why it was required for me to give you a "complete answer", because apparently you seem to be the only person that has a problem with what I wrote.  Just saying "real me" is an "OKAY" answer?  That is the same thing as saying it's not a proper answer.  Why do you feel you need to argue with me on this point, if you really want to help people out on this forum don't you think you should give them the accurate answer, and not just an "OKAY" answer? If some one ask me what 美国 is in english and I say United States America.  Yeah sure it's an "OKAY" answer because people would understand it right?  But is it correct?  No.  When you are teaching someone english, would you give them an OKAY answer, or the correct answer?  It's call sloppy teaching if you say the "OKAY" answer is fine.
  So in my initial response where I say "real me" is not proper english.  I did not make any mistakes in it.  As to whether or not I should have explain it more or not is a different issue, since my response was to the question that asked the question, and not to you.  You can post a response explaining that it should be "The real me", but that doesn't mean what I wrote was wrong.
Finally, this will be my last response on this topic, my intention here was to help others, and not to start a philosophical discussion on what proper english means.  You are most welcome to reply and present your arguement again since that seems to be what you prefer to do rather than help others out here.  In the mean time I will continue to help others when I can.  Thank you for the "meaningful" discussion.:smile:

I agree the discussions have to stop here. But I think I am entitled to state my final response, as you've got yours.

my intention here was to help others, and not to start a philosophical discussion on what proper english means...

1. I am talking about grammatical possibilities, and you are talking about syntactical usages.

2.When did I get caught in the discussion? My first response here was just admiring Cindy Lauper's song!  I am sorry to say, it is your toothpaste squeezing way of response that got me in.  It's like a hit-and-run to an  answer that was basically in Chinese. Everybody is going, "what happened????"

3.Apparently your first and second replies were not that satisfactorily helpful neither to the original poster nor to cliemx ,as the stressed intention of yours(which is very appreicated).

4. In reply # 10, You reminded me, "Hey man, there is always a "the" before "real me" in your examples!"  That was when you were being very helpful. You helped the original poster, and me to a point, I must say.

5. It would be very nice of you if you could have pointed out the problem with "real me" at the beginning. Then I would have just said, "Right."  And  we wouldn't have to undergo all these philosophical crabs.

6. I'll say these crabs helped too, to whoever is instereted in this topic.

7. Speaking of crab, I think you're very (too)nice to the 请帮我到想questions.  Maybe he/she really needed the help badly, and maybe he/she is just a very young student, but this 请帮我到想attitude really sucks.
And what sort of language is" 请帮我到想"? It is not proper Chinese(请帮我想一想), nor is it proper Taiwanese(请gah我dau想一leh), but "bang!", you offered your direct answers. (I didn't know 空心菜 is water celery, either, darn!)

I am not going to help with this --->请帮我到想 Actually i am not sure I even need to help you with the above stuff they are really easy to look up in the dictionary.
